When you have it working as you want, remember to use the SD Card Copier
function to make a clone of the install.

It will reduce the size of the image down to the size of the card you
clone to, say from 16gb down on to a 8gb card.

you can then copy the image onto your computer for storage.

There is also a way to further reduce the size of the image, using a
program called piShrink, which will run on the 'pi.

What I sometimes do, is to first use SD Copier to copy the backup onto a
usb stick and then use piShrink to reduce it further, then store the
image.
