Would I see any obvious difference between the "new" main mix and the old one. They both look exactly the same to me. If I play my old favourite and then switch to the main mix in the app playback continues with no break. I expected that changing URLs would restart the playback.
It certainly should. The main difference is that in the "interactive" mode (know before the recent additions) you can skip tracks. You'd then be ahead of the "regular" stream, in which you can't skip. And the interactive mode always starts at the beginning of a track,
The "regular" stream would play in "real time": it would start wherever the server currently is streaming. Skipping is not possible. It's like FM radio.
