If you only want one user to use AlienBBC at a time you can use mkfifo and use the created fifo instead of /dev/fd/3
Alternatively for DS-106 flipflip patched mplayer to output to stdout and all other messages to stderr - this way it behaves like a proper Unix apps and handles pipes.
