I went in again and noticed a warning under the selection box that says the scan was aborted and media will be unavailable until rescanned. Damn. So i put it back to "check for new..." And clicked RESCAN.
NOW the external drive is chooching and the progress bar is SLOWLY increasing. It's gonna take awhile...
