To get the status, I'm just using -["status", "-", 1, "tags:cdegloyrstAKNS"]- (If TrackStat is installed, tags also has "R"). This gives me artist_id, artist_ids, albumartist_ids, composer_ids, and trackartist_ids. I presumed that artist_id would be the main artist, and this is what I originally used. Turns out this is sometimes the composer ID. Not sure of the use of artist_id if its role can change. As stated above using (in order of preference) trackartist_ids[0], artist_ids[0], artist_id seems to resolve the issue.
