All material settings are saved to the browser's local storage. You can use the save button (the disk icon) in the settings dialog to save some settings as defaults for new users (i.e. when the settings are no longer in local storage). There's a bug in 1.x where the home items are not saved using this mechanism, so are only in local storage. I'll fix the bug or 1.0.2 If your browser is set to clear cookies, etc, on exit - then it will also clear Material's settings.
