I'm still looking as there were multiple way socketwrapper can be used
and you are testing only one of them. I'm not sure if some of the ways
are still needed but they at least need to be examined.

socketwrapper watchdog was implemented to deal with remote stream which
are considered to be infinite. It is disabled when it is being used
"local" for files.

Does the spotty application behave as a series of files being streamed
with gaps in between ? If so then it may explain why this behaviour was
not seen before.

I need to understand why spotty suddenly has this problem ? and that the
change does not break current uses of socketwrapper including the
watchdog activation (i.e. you have proved that watchdog still work in
the same manner with no zombies when streams stall).
