OK, I can grasp the concept that slimserver starts slightly differently
from a command line vs. Slimtray, though I have to say I'm bemused about
what is different about this plugin.

But I'm completely stumped on how I debug this - if I start it from the
command line with a debug option it works fine. Any ideas?
