Thanks for the input - that makes a lot of sense but suggests no simple solution.
AlienBBC is a 'nice to have' for me so I can take it or leave it, but I might have a further play around (perhaps trying to compile mplayer natively) if I get the time. However, your warnings about performance without the FPU may mean it is not really worth the effort.
