The apparent cause was the iPeng player in my iPhone (same wifi network) stalled on playing a long-departed BBC iplayer stream. I seldom use iPeng on the iPhone, and the player was apparently not synchronised with any other. I powered off the player and immediately the iPad worked correctly again. Playing something in the iPhone doesn't cause any problem since. Perhaps the phone and ipad were synchronized when I played that BBC stream. I can't remember, it was weeks or months ago :confused:
