You have two options here:

  
- <- Put a number before your period tag. You'd have to tag all your
  files, of course.
- You could define PERIODSORT and tell Custom Browse to use it. Then
  you'll have to tag all your files with PERIOD = Medieval and
  PERIODSORT = 1 etc.
  

Introducing new tags won't help speed up your Custom Browse & Scan
experience.

Advanced:

It -might -be enough to tag PERIODSORT once for each PERIOD. You use
seven periods, then put seven files in a directory ("+PERIODSORT") that
is scanned and tag each file with (only? you could try that) PERIOD and
PERIODSORT.
