In general, making an outbound connection is safe, especially if the target is reached via SSL (caveats ... e.g. faked DNS, not checking certificates, rogue system at the end of the link). The biggest problem comes if you enable initiation of inbound connections (rather than a remote system responding to an outbound connection). For example - some people use port forwarding on their broadband router so that they can easily access their media when they are away from home. Unfortunately making things easy for themselves also makes it very easy for people with bad intent. Those people have the benefit of cleverer people who have writeen and share tools to automate the searching out and exploiting such links.
