Awesome ! You can count on me if you need help for testing or else.
I think that a text field offers a better continuity in the navigation.
It could be an "auto expendable" text field when you click on it ? Or as
you said just a button which expand a text field in the main toolbar ? 
Yes may be it's better a button, it's more aesthetics and finally with
this button which put focus in an "auto expendable" text field you have
a behavior similar to the search bar of the original lms skin which is
not the baddest thing of this old skin ;)


Btw thanks for the "allow keypress to jump via jumplist" , it works fine
and I already use it many time !
Just a detail about the letter overlay :  if you press "R" it displays
"Q". Hard to explain but it seems that the overlay take the top left
element, instead may be it should take the top right element to have a
more logical behavior. I tried to take a look in browse-page.js (line
2597 ?)  but I'm not an expert :p
