Makes the wife happy -- Sam, that's great to hear! 

For the brightness, take a look at the Auto Display plugin (often
called AutoDim):

It will let you have the Squeezebox brightness automatically dim to a
certain level at 10pm, and then revert to the regular/previous
brightness at 8am. I use it to make all my Squeezebox displays go dark
at night, and come back to life in the morning. 

More domestic tranquility pitches -- if your wife, like mine, likes the
bedroom clocks set "fast", check out my FuzzyTime plugin. I never would
have gotten a Squeezebox in the bedroom, well, not using a screensaver
that displays the time of day, without FuzzyTime.
