'Zones was implemented in squeeze*slave*' (https://github.com/ralph-irving/squeezeslave/commit/7bf98c105a0501d148098ea3bddca0bb08e369a4) ~10 years ago. You could use that as a guide to what needs to be changed in squeeze*lite*.
Squeeze*lite* for Windows uses the audio_pa.c (portaudio) interface which was the only audio interface supported by squeeze*slave*.
