Yes, the original script works fine; SS starts automatically when the
system boots; and I've also invoked the script to 'start', 'stop' and
'restart' slimserver. I'm using the official SD Deb package - a recent
nightly from the SD 'Testing' repo.

I set JAVA_HOME in /etc/environment when I was installing the MIP GUI.
Will this be picked up when /etc/init.d/slimserver runs at startup? I
guess I could try it in the script anyway.

Thanks very much for the detailed explanation. I'll work through it in
a terminal, as you suggest - very useful for improving my understanding
of pipes!

I'll try your original script again tomorrow, and post the error
messages (getting a bit too tired now, and don't want to make
mistakes).

Thanks for your interest and help.
