The info-bubble helps a bit here. Persistent & Cache have the same
objective: make your "long" connection more reliable. A lot of servers
today expect people to not stream for long time (except webradio of
course) so they will close such long sessions. They want you to get what
you need as quickly as possible and then leave...

Cache is doing that by downloading the WHOLE track as quickly as
possible and caching it into the disk. Now if that download fails, the
playback will fail at some time, there is no retry. Cache obviously does
not work for webradio streams or servers that does not communicate
expected length and cache uses potentially large amount of disk.

Persistent is using a different approach where it does not try to go
fast, but it is stubborn. If the connection closes, it will re-open it
until it has received everything expected or more than 5 consecutive
errors happen. So it solves the problem differently and still have
series of (very) long sessions, which might not look like "playing nice"
for some servers. Now it works well for webradio as well.

Note that if you chose "Cache" it will fallback automatically to
"Persistent" when expected length is unknown.

I personally use "Cache" because I think the likelihood of a quick
download to fail is *very* low and I don't mind the disk usage
