The delay is almost certainly caused by the plugin being unable to find iTunes itself - not the track!
Have you recently upgraded either iTunes or SlimServer? I've noticed that the SlimServer installer resets the 'run at login' setting back to 'run on startup' which is not what's required for the plugin. Sometimes an upgrade to iTunes doesn't register the correct COM hooks for the plugin either. This is usually fixed by an iTunes re-install.
