First off, thanks to flipflip for SSODS, which works brilliantly on my
new DS-107+/128. Something from your wishlist will be on its way
shortly.

Having successfully installed SS 6.5.3, I decided to install AlienBBC,
as most of my morning listening is to Radio 4. Installation was fine,
but I could not get the streams to play at all. They would either seem
to try to connect continuously, or to connect and immediately stop.

I found the information in the SSODS Readme file regarding the
necessary file conversion rules for RTSP to allow AlienBBC to work, and
added them to the convert.conf file in /SlimServer. Restarting SS made
no difference - still no sound.

After enabling Telnet on the DS, I managed to determine that there was
nothing wrong with the AlienBBC or SS installations, and that I was
able to play a BBC stream via the command line.

Eventually, I discovered, by looking at the file types menu under
Server Settings/File Types, that the three RTSP file types were pointed
at mplayer.sh, whereas the conversion rules in convert.conf all pointed
at mplayer-stdout. I couldn't understand at first why this was the
case.

It turns out that within the /SlimServer/Plugins/Alien directory, that
there is a file called custom-convert.conf which contains three RTSP
conversion rules that all point to mplayer.sh. SlimServer was reading
this file, and the rules within it were overriding those that I'd added
to /SlimServer/convert.conf.

I then renamed the custom-convert.conf file to custom-convert.conf.old,
restarted SlimServer to get it to re-read the convert.cong file and this
fixed the problem - AlienBBC now works just fine.
