I installed the older MPlayer (03-15-06) recommended on the AlienBBC site in /usr/local/bin, the latest version of Lame (just let it install automatically), and the AlienBBCv1.06_6.5 as per instructions and it now all works on my Intel iMac with a NetGear router. However, I did have another (newer) version of Mplayer installed and that produced similar symptoms (i.e. everything looked OK but deafening silence from the squeezebox).
I have an Aiport Extreme at work.
