You've had odd and inconsistent issues such as sudden appearance of "under voltage" messages. With Pi's (and I have 1,3 & 4) - with USB devices whose power demand can significantly vary according to activity, such as GSM, CD drive or DVB-S stick, after many instances of dodgy boots and inexplicable failures, I always use a powered Hub (either separate or integrated in a monitor) which can deliver full rating out of each socket - it also means device is fed from a single PSU. I don't know if it is always required but it seems to make things reliable.
