If your device runs on Linux you should be able to install Lirc. Not sure how easy it is in your specific setup to then control Squeezelite, but using Lirc you should be able to control anything (including volume of players) directly on LMS. Alternatively, some remotes with a USB dongle (don't know about the hifiberry one) emulate keypresses.
