SBs only support a few formats natively. Any audio format that is not
supported natively by the SB (e.g. WMA for an SB1 or SoftSqueeze, AAC
for SB3) has to be transcoded. The applications which does the
transcoding will run on the same system as Slimserver.

AlienBBC has two parts

1. A browser interface to the BBC stations - this interface enables a
user to find a RealAudio station or program - it doesn't play the
audio.

2. Support for RealAudio - all the necessary protocol handling to
enable RTSP streams and RealAudio format to be trasncoded.

re: mplayer for thecus (this is really another thread) - I'm certain an
mplayer can be be built to suit the Thecus but I won't be able to build
the cross development environment for a few days.
