Interesting stuff. Seems like this problem is much more likely to occur when the pending submissions file gets large. I shall have a think about batching submissions...
LastFM is very frustrating because they seem far more interesting in developing new features (that I'm not interested in) than fixing bugs with the existing functionality. Or even just keeping things working!
