Sorry, I do appreciate the help. Rather than mess around with SS 6.5.4 anymore, I've installed the beta of Squeezecenter 7.0 and the corresponding IR Blaster plugin to see if that solves the problem.
If nothing else, at least Squeezecenter 7.0 tells you exactly where the log files are kept. I'll let this go for a few days and see if the problem recurrs and if so, I'll be able to access the log files in order to forward them to you.
