Thanks for the explanation erland: it seems I was too hasty. Restoring the 12 Jan backup does appear to have worked exactly as you described as the play stats and ratings (at least from the last couple of days before the restore) are all still there! Magic. Once again, your brilliance shines, thanks very much.
As to what went wrong in the first place, I'm really not sure what went wrong. I use the debian package (on an Ubuntu) machine. I switched from SS to SC about three weeks ago (probably 12 Jan!). SC creates a user called "squeezecenter" rather than "slimserver" and, unfortunately, I didn't change the permissions of the directory I use for TrackStat backups to give the squeezecenter write access. Nevertheless, at first everything was going well. Then, a few days ago, some changes were made to the debian distribution, which changed the location of preference files. Once I realised what happened, I copied all the old preferences (including Plugin preferences such as trackstat) to the new location. A couple of days later I realised some ratings were missing. I can't explain why some not all were lost. So there is still a bit of a mystery there, but as far as I can tell, TrackStat did the best possible job in the circumstances, so I don't think there's anything you need to do to improve the plugin. I'm a very happy camper!
