Actually I do a mix of two: I have it sitting in a dock quite a lot,
displaying the NowPlaying screen, that way I can get my ratings done (I
only recently started that) ;-) NowPlaying on iPeng keeps the iPod
running (you would have to manually turn it off, which is just one
click on the top button).

If I'm not siting next to the dock I actually turn it off immediately
after using it. The only thing you have to take care off is that you
should wait with any browsing/server controlling until the WLAN icon at
the top left shows up because this actually speeds things up (this
typically takes around 1/2 - 1s, yet Safari otherwise brings up a Nag
Screen just to immediately take it away again).

Battery life IS an issue while browsing (this is not an iPeng issue but
applies generally). If the iPod's just lying around turned on it doesn't
consume THAT much power (can have it that way for a day or so) but
browsing will suck on your battery, don't expect more than two hours of
continuous browsing, especially if you got extensive JavaScript
processing (try SC's new default skin for a nice example ;-). Obviously
the processor and the WLAN consume quite a bit of power, the display
less so.

So go get yourself a nice dock ;-) I recommend to use the Apple one
(even though I have not used it), since the 3rd party thingy I use only
charges the iPod when connected to a PC, not to a charger (not even the
Apple one) - the iTouch is generally quite picky on power sources.

Pooh, was that elaborate enough?
