Perl 5.8.8, actually. I feel like the server actually can't handle this command being issued in quick series, and in fact it must be effectively be babysat - you can't send another message until the timeout for the first has elapsed.
I haven't looked at the server code yet, just my impressions. Really this should be dead simple, but I've been working on this for (no kidding) hours.
