I've recently been contemplating alternative ways of visualising music collections, in particular using 3D and other aesthetic approaches that forego extensive functionality in favour of being slick and easy-to-use. Also of interest to me is a ten-foot interface for SqueezeCenter; something that could be displayed on the TV and used at parties etc.
So, here is a proof-of-concept for a 3D album browser. The visualisation I've used is "inspired by" (read: ripped off from) Apple's CoverFlow interface. I chose this to get people thinking of the general approach (probably being comfortable with the metaphor) rather than getting hung up on something more exotic. What do I mean by proof-of-concept? Well the idea is to understand the technical feasibility and generate discussion on the benefits (if any) of such an approach to the SD community. I'm hoping people will have other ideas on how music collections could be visualised (not just the old favourite album art). This PoC has just enough functionality to get the point across and inspire - it is by no means intended to exhaustive (or *ahem* stable). If it generates enough interest then I may develop it further. So, please give it a go if you're interested. I've attached some screenshots below. Please make sure you read the readme.txt file and peruse the config.ini file before starting it up, and let me know if you have any issues.
