The problem wasn't permissions. I set them to full to no avail.

I solved it by deleting the 3 directories, unchecked the plugins,
restarted the server, checked that the plugins had indeed gone from the
list.

I then unzipped the plugins again, restarted the server and checked the
plugins. And it worked.

Something must have been "trashed" when I first did a faulty install.
