OK. Installed mplayer into /usr/local/bin , and now everything works
OK!

It's a bit confusing, as the latest mplayer for OS X is an application,
rather than an installation package, so it offers no easy way to put
mplayer into /usr/local/bin.

I copied over an mplayer file from another computer, as I couldn't find
it in the Package contents of MPlayer OSX application.

I really don't know what changed in my system to knock mplayer out of
the bin folder in the first place.

Thanks bpa for helping me resolve this.
