Actually I only found two versions of mplayer in that location - but
both of them were applications, not unix executable files. Renaming
mplayer_noaltivec to mplayer didn't work for me, but this did:

Go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html and get MPlayer OS X
1.0rc2
Open Package Contents on MPlayer OSX, go to
Resources/External_Binaries
Open Package Contents on mplayer_noaltivec, go to MacOS
You will find mplayer unix executable file
Copy this to /usr/local/bin

I am even happier now, as this way I can use mplayer v1.0rc2, instead
of the rc1 file I had copied over from another computer.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread (and other threads)
for their help. I got really confused about mplayer, but I hope the
step-by-step guide I wrote above is:

A. Correct!!!
B. Of use to others
