I abandoned the MacPorts approach and used cpan instead, and I'm now up and running. 1) Install OpenSSL from http://www.openssl.org . I grabbed the 0.9.8g tarball from http://www.openssl.org/source/ , configured, built, and installed. 2) sudo perl -MCPAN -e shell >cpan install Net::SSLeay (Lots of stuff happens while things are configured and built.) >cpan install IO::Socket::SSL (More stuff.) Everything works now on Mac OS X.
