There are builds of mplayer for 10.4.x both for Intel and PPC processors.
To be sure about mplayer, you should test running mplayer standalone in a Terminal window. This is applicable for all versions of OSX. If a banner is displayed then it might be OK and would warrant a further test to play a BBC stream.
