You'd probably need to use a Lua applet to get a nice sliderbar widget
on the Squeezebox Controller screen. The following post shows
screenshots of the very utilitarian Controller GUIs that PowerCenter
offers for X10 (on/off/brighten/dim) and Insteon (on/off/percentages
10-100).
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41482

In addition to being primitive, and only supporting Insteon, the
PowerCenter 10-100% brightness doesn't know the current brightness of
the Insteon dimmer it's controlling -- nobody's bothered to write code
to deal with that (my X10 code and Greg's Insteon code were very much
"itch-scratching" jobs, writing just enough code to meet our personal
needs; hard to justify putting a lot of effort into it when the profit
margin is so bad!). But if your plugin implemented a CLI command to
return the current state of a smartdimmer, your slick Lua sliderbar
applet could, like the Controller's volume slider, offer a better UI
than PowerCenter's Insteon Controller UI -- your applet would just need
to make a Comet/CLI call to get the status before displaying the slider
widget.

I'd love to include Z-Wave support in PowerCenter, I just
- don't think the current hacked if/elsif/else approach that it takes
to Insteon/X10-Firecracker/X10-CM11 controllers should be used
- don't have the time to make a nice extensible API for new home
automation controllers & protocols
- don't have much interest in reading the Logitech Public Source
License Lua code to figure out applets

If you're interested, I'd welcome PowerCenter patches. And most of
PowerCenter is GPLed, so you're free to do what you want with it within
the broad constraints of the GPL.

PS. Gordon, thanks again for the kind review.
