Assuming you are using the "classic" candy bar remote, and not the new Controller (with screen) remote - have you got any other plugins installed which might also use "press and hold play"? That would explain why it works from SC but not via the remote. Lazysearch is one that I remember caused issues in the past - but I think this was fixed.
