I don't think (but am not sure) that having two copies of mplayer will
cause problems.

I can't work out what your set-up is, and how you were trying to put
the file in the trash.

If mplayer was actually visible in its folder, there should be no
problem putting it in the trash as usual, and I would not expect a
problem emptying the trash. However if you tried to remove it using
Terminal, there may have been a misprint (there certainly is a
misprint, but it may only be in your post), as there is no such folder
as /user/local/bin, it is /usr/local/bin.

Do you have the GUI program MPlayer in your Applications folder? (Note
the difference in case between mplayer and MPlayer)? For some time now
this is all you need. A long time ago one had to extract the Unix
program mplayer from deep inside MPlayer, but a change in AlienBBC some
time ago means that this is no longer needed.
