I just installed AlienBBC on my Ubuntu 8 system and had problems: everything seemed to work, except that I did not hear anything! It turned out that the program mplayer was not installed on my server.
"sudo apt-get install mplayer" solved my problem. So much for reading installation guides, it is in fact item 4 on http://www.x2systems.com/AlienBBC/installation.html! Perhaps there are other sloppy readers out there...
