Okay .. messed around a little more. It turns out, if I press the Powermate button twice it MUTEs, and remains MUTEd until a single press returns to the original volume. So I think it's solved.
Now, if I can just figure out how to get the Powermate to work directly with Squeezecenter WITHOUT running Moose, for the times that I'm not.
