If it works with just WAV and not MP3 or Flac - then you have a CPU
problem.  The CPU is overloaded and cannot decode RealAudio and
re-encode into MP3 or Flac in RealTime.

That make me believe you are using the wrong version of mplayer-stdout
- if the processor in your 409 does not have a FPU it will be v. slow
at decoding and so you get bursts as it takes longer to decode than it
takes to broadcast.

If you are getting continuous audio (i.e. no loss of content)  but with
gaps of silence then it is CPU.

If you are getting audio where some audio has been replaced with
silence - then you have a network problem.  

If the problem is CPU then try a mplayer with fixed point (i.e. ends
with -fp).
