Bingo: setting SyncOptions' wait behaviour to Default did the trick (neither "attempt mid-track sync" nor "wait for next track" worked). Now, the players sync with just a brief mid-track glitch, which I can live with. I could probably disable SyncOptions completely now. Thanks!
