>When would Band be different to Artist or Album Artist I wonder?
Simple really - when you enter a Band tag that is different from Artist or
Album Artist ;-)

In FLAC tags, Band = Band.

Mp3 id3 tags are a different kettle of fish. id3 doesn't support Album Artist,
and Microsoft in its wonderful wisdom thought it would be a good idea to use
Band instead (Windows Media Player). Some other apps copied that frig.

By default, mp3 id3v2.3 TPE2 frame represents Band/Orchestra information, and
SC will read that frame as the Band contributor. This is what the id3 standard
says the tag should be used for.

Mainly, people use it to store Orchestras for classical music. I use it for
band names that famous people have used as an alias. So for example, Klaus
Schulze produced a few albums that were more techno/mainstream, under an alias
name "Whanfried", so I set ARTIST=Klaus Schulze and BAND=Whanfried.

Some people put a primary artists band name in there, so maybe ARTIST=Paul
McCartney, and BAND=Wings. Another example: ARTIST=Neil Young and the
BAND=Stray Gators, or ARTIST=Buddy Holly and the BAND=The Crickets.

SC can also be configured to treat TPE2 as Album Artist.

SC can also read an ALBUMARTIST tag, which I think is better than misusing BAND
as it gives more options to tagging a collection, but some people prefer
compatibility mode.
