It should work to create a "Artists" menu and just check the "Album Artist" role. I suppose you have already tried this and this is what gives you the empty menu ?
Two things to check: 1. If you look at the "Song Info" page of a song, does it show the artist as "Album Artist", "Artist" or "Track Artist" ? If it shows up as "Artist" or "Track Artist" that's the reason why the menu is empty. 2. Do you get any errors in the SqueezeCenter log found through SqueezeCenter Settings/Advanced/Logging when you enter the menu ?
