I found this wiki guide to work great for setting up MusicIP on headless Ubuntu 8.10, including analyzing the fingerprints as a separate process and saving them as tags in the files: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Integrating_MusicIP_with_SqueezeCenter. I did have difficulties getting things to finally "click" in the end, but then I installed Spicefly Sugarcube and voila, there it was. Now it works with or without Sugarcube activated.
There is a free version of MIP. It doesn't have the "Power Tools" and playlists are limited to 75 songs max, but otherwise it's the same as the paid version (which is $20).
