I have SqueezeCenter running on an iMac in a bedroom and I would like to us an iBook (12" G3 Dual USB) to play music in the living room. I currently have ubuntu server 6.06 installed on the ibook (kernel 2.6.15-26-powerpc) but would consider installing any OS that people think would be fast enough. I would like to have the option to leave the ibook off when not playing music to save energy and so a fast booting OS is desireable. My experience has been that the windows managers / desktop managers are slow to boot and slow to use.
Of the three options, which would be best for my situation and where should I look for instructions on installation and setup for my hardware? 1. squeezeslave a. I am currently trying to get this to build on the ibook but still having issues. 2. softsqueeze (running headless) a. Do I need to install a windows manager / desktop manager to run in headless mode? b. Do I need to install a windows manager / desktop manager to install and setup softsqueeze? 3. squeezeplay a. I have this running on a Windows XP machine and like it, but I don't know if I could get it run on the ibook. If I could but needed a desktop manager I would be worried about boot time and responsiveneess. I look forward to your suggestions and assistance as I have been trying this on and off on my own (as a linux newbie) for a while now.
