I believe I built 3.9b1 with Java 6. I can't verify as I am away from home.
Looking on web there are a number of applications which have problem running with the Snow Leopard VM. Some seem to work with by change the VM preference to 32 bit. It looks to be an OSX problem. Pleas give more details on "won't work" - for example Do you get any erropr messages on startup and then it fails.
