The specific item I was looking for was The Essay on Radio 3. It appeared in the AlienBBC listings, but not in the iPlayer listings. Though I couldn't get it to play with AlienBBC.
There was evidently something weird about this, as iPlayer Downloader on my Mac (which is not the official BBC item, but a third-party program) showed The Essay as a listing but would not download it. I think it may have got included at the end of a concert, but didn't feel like getting the whole concert. My general impression is that AlienBBC often shows more programs for a given day than iPlayer. Also that they often begin the listings at different times of day, one might start at 5 a.m. and the other at 9 a.m., for instance.
