After long searching I now decided on Icons: I'll take them from wikimedia commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Weather_icons) - this is really the only place where I found proper licensing information, which allows me to use the images.
There are some ugly icons I know, don't be afraid :) Just scroll down to the ones starting with 'Weather-' - these are from the Tango Desktop Project or variations of it.
