1. Not sure but I don't think you have to have hardware. I think it will control software players too. 3. If you have squeezeslave running you must have the server etc. running too. You can also try squeezeplay. This looks and behave more like a touch. http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Nightly_Builds It is beta and unsupported so don't expect miracles, but it does work on my pc and plays music well.
