A good alternative to NAS is also Windows Home Server. When I compared both options, there was no question : the WHS is witrhin the same price range and offers at the same time far more flexibity, including easy SBS installation, enough CPU to perform the teask, etc. At the same time, it allows easy extension of storage capacity and adds the nice back up solution to my home setting, backing-up my PCs every day. There are several WHS solutions proposed by OEMs, which are designed to have low consmption power compared to a standard PC, and I leave mine on 24/7, which even allows me to access my files remotely when I am away from home.
